COMPARE:

Smartlead or lemlist for agency outbound

Smartlead against lemlist for running outbound for several clients at once, with the same seven questions asked of each and neither one flattered. Mamba Labs builds Apify actors. Clay to Instantly Smartlead Push is ours, it is the third column, and it does not win most of these rows.

The verdict

Smartlead is built for the agency case and priced for it. lemlist is built for a team running its own outreach and priced per seat. The white label and the uncapped mailboxes are what decide this.

The same questions, both tools

SmartleadlemlistClay to Instantly Smartlead Push
What it actually doesSends cold email sequences at volume, with unlimited mailboxes on every paid plan.Runs a multichannel sequence where one step is an email, the next a LinkedIn action, the next a call task.Moves a finished list into an Instantly or a Smartlead campaign, with the rules applied on the way in.
Coverage and hit rateUnlimited mailbox connections, rotation across them, and a warmup pool that runs on all of them.Three channels in one timeline, plus warmup and a lead database sold on the same account. Both senders, one payload shape, and a dry run that returns the exact body without sending it.
What it costsPer plan, with the mailbox count uncapped, so the price moves on active leads rather than inboxes.Per seat per month, in tiers, with the lead database and the warmup pool gated to the higher ones.A cent per lead pushed, and nothing at all for a dry run.
How it fits a workflowA full API, webhooks on every event, and a white label option agencies actually use.Its own editor is the workflow. The API exists and is the thinner half of the product. It is the step between the list and the sender, called from Clay or from a script.
Where the data comes fromIt sends. Lead data comes from wherever you built the list.It carries a contact database of its own, so a list can start inside the tool rather than outside it.Your own rows. It adds no data and reads no provider.
What it takes to set upSame domain and warmup work as any sender, plus more configuration surface to get through. The multichannel steps need a connected LinkedIn account per sender, which is more to set up than email alone.Paste the sender key, map your columns once, run the dry run, then turn it on.
Where it stopsThe interface is built for an operator, not a first time user, and it shows.Per seat pricing turns expensive the moment an agency runs it for several clients. It does not send anything. Without a sender it has nowhere to put a lead.

The same seven questions are asked on every compare page here, in this order, so two of these pages can be read against each other.

Who wins what

  • Smartlead wins on what it costs, where it stops. A cold email sender priced for volume, with an API deep enough to build on.
  • lemlist wins on where the data comes from. A sequencer that runs email, LinkedIn and calls in one sequence, with its own lead database.
  • Clay to Instantly Smartlead Push wins on what it actually does. Pushes a finished, scored list into whichever of the two you already send with.
  • Nobody wins on coverage and hit rate, how it fits a workflow, what it takes to set up. Smartlead and lemlist give the same answer on those, and we are not going to invent a difference.

What is best for you

If you send for clients, Smartlead wins on structure before anyone argues about features. Unlimited mailboxes, a white label domain, and one account per client without a seat charge is the shape agency work actually has. lemlist is the better product to sit in front of all day, and it is the wrong shape for a service business. The exception is an agency whose offer is genuinely multichannel, where the LinkedIn steps are worked by a real person. That is a small number of agencies and most of the ones who say it are only sending email.
