COMPARE:

Instantly or Smartlead for sending cold email

A straight comparison of Instantly and Smartlead for sending cold email at volume, answered on the same seven dimensions as every other compare page here. Mamba Labs builds Apify actors. Clay to Instantly Smartlead Push is ours, it is the third column, and it does not win most of these rows.

The short answer

Both send. Instantly is the one to pick if the domains are new and you want the warmup, the placement tests and the blocklist in the same account. Smartlead is the one to pick if you are already sending at volume and the mailbox count is what your bill is made of.

The same questions, both tools

InstantlySmartleadClay to Instantly Smartlead Push
What it actually doesSends cold email sequences from a pool of mailboxes and keeps those mailboxes warm.Sends cold email sequences at volume, with unlimited mailboxes on every paid plan.Moves a finished list into an Instantly or a Smartlead campaign, with the rules applied on the way in.
Coverage and hit rateMailbox pool, warmup network, inbox placement testing and a shared blocklist, in one account.Unlimited mailbox connections, rotation across them, and a warmup pool that runs on all of them. Both senders, one payload shape, and a dry run that returns the exact body without sending it.
What it costsPer plan, with mailbox counts and monthly send volume as the two things that move the price.Per plan, with the mailbox count uncapped, so the price moves on active leads rather than inboxes.A cent per lead pushed, and nothing at all for a dry run.
How it fits a workflowCampaigns take a CSV or an API push. Replies land in a unified inbox that a human can work.A full API, webhooks on every event, and a white label option agencies actually use.It is the step between the list and the sender, called from Clay or from a script.
Where the data comes fromIt sends. The lead data is yours, and its own lead marketplace is a separate paid product. It sends. Lead data comes from wherever you built the list.Your own rows. It adds no data and reads no provider.
What it takes to set upConnecting and warming domains is the real work, and it takes two to three weeks before you send.Same domain and warmup work as any sender, plus more configuration surface to get through.Paste the sender key, map your columns once, run the dry run, then turn it on.
Where it stopsIt is a sender. Deciding who deserves the email is a job you do somewhere else. The interface is built for an operator, not a first time user, and it shows. It does not send anything. Without a sender it has nowhere to put a lead.

The same seven questions are asked on every compare page here, in this order, so two of these pages can be read against each other.

What each is actually better at

  • Instantly wins on coverage and hit rate, how it fits a workflow, what it takes to set up. A cold email sender with warmup and deliverability tooling in the same product.
  • Smartlead wins on what it costs, where it stops. A cold email sender priced for volume, with an API deep enough to build on.
  • Clay to Instantly Smartlead Push wins on what it actually does. Pushes a finished, scored list into whichever of the two you already send with.
  • Nobody wins on where the data comes from. Instantly and Smartlead give the same answer there, and we are not going to invent a difference.

What is best for you

If this is your first cold email system, take Instantly and spend the saved time on the domains. If you are running more than about thirty mailboxes, or you are sending on behalf of clients, Smartlead's uncapped mailboxes and its API are worth the rougher interface. Neither of them decides who deserves the email, and that is the part that actually moves reply rate. Get the list right first and the choice between these two stops mattering much.
