COMPARE:
Upwork or Fiverr for hiring a freelancer
Upwork against Fiverr for getting work done by an independent professional, with the same seven questions asked of each and neither one flattered. Mamba Labs builds Apify actors, and neither of these is one of them, so there is no third column on this page.

The verdict
Fiverr is a catalog of fixed price packages you can order today. Upwork is a hiring marketplace for work you scope, interview for and manage over time.
Side by side
| Upwork | Fiverr | |
|---|---|---|
| What it actually does | Matches a business with independent professionals for hourly or fixed price work, from a quick task to a long contract. | Sells defined services such as a logo, a landing page or a voice over as fixed price packages. |
| Coverage and hit rate | Development, design, marketing, finance, operations and support talent, from individuals to agencies. | Creative, marketing, writing and technical services, browsable by category and price. |
| What it costs | Freelancers set their rates. The client pays a marketplace fee on top, and some plans add features. | The listed package price plus a service fee, known before you order. |
| How it fits a workflow | Post a job, review proposals and interview, then manage contracts, time tracking and payment in one place. | Pick a package, send the brief and wait for delivery. There is no hiring step. |
| Where the data comes from | Profiles, work history and client reviews built on the platform itself. | Seller profiles, ratings and reviews built on the platform. |
| What it takes to set up | A job post in minutes. Good hires come from a careful brief and a few interviews. | Minutes. You can order before you have written a job description. |
| Where it stops | Screening proposals takes time, and quality varies widely across the same price point. | Packages fit small defined jobs. Ongoing or complex work sits awkwardly in a fixed menu. |
The same seven questions are asked on every compare page here, in this order, so two of these pages can be read against each other.
Where each one genuinely wins
- Upwork wins on coverage and hit rate, how it fits a workflow. A freelance marketplace where you post a job, compare proposals and hire hourly or by project.
- Fiverr wins on what it costs, what it takes to set up. A marketplace of packaged services you buy at a listed price, like a product.
- Nobody wins on what it actually does, where the data comes from, where it stops. Upwork and Fiverr give the same answer on those, and we are not going to invent a difference.
Where to get them
What we would actually do
Match the platform to the shape of the job. A logo, a short video edit or a one off landing page is a package, and Fiverr gets it ordered in minutes at a known price. A developer for three months, a part time bookkeeper or anything that needs judgment is a hire, and Upwork's proposals, interviews and contracts are built for that. On either site, the brief decides the result more than the platform does.
