Where this starts

You know the shape of the customer and you have no rows. Buying a list gets you the same companies your competitors bought, and filtering a database by industry code gets you a category that stopped describing anything in about 2009. The market you actually sell to is defined by behaviour, not by a dropdown.

Traditional Search Tools

  • Apollo, Cognism or a database export. Ten thousand rows in an afternoon. The filters are firmographic, so what you get is a category rather than a market, and every competitor can pull the same export.
  • LinkedIn Sales Navigator saved searches. The filters are better than most databases and the export path is deliberately awkward. Good for named accounts, painful for volume.
  • Public registers and filings. Free, unfashionable, and full of companies nobody else is prospecting because they are annoying to get at.
  • Conference and association directories. A membership list is a qualified list somebody else already built.
  • Start from your customers. Take your twenty best accounts, work out what they share that is observable from outside, and go looking for that. Half a day, and it is the highest quality list you will ever build.
