The situation

A case needs an orthopedic surgeon who has testified before, licensed in the right state, and free of conflicts. The names exist across a dozen directories, each with its own specialty labels and its own terms for reuse. Law firms rebuild the same shortlist case after case, and the shortlist is only as good as the directories somebody remembered to check.

Traditional Search Tools

  • Expert witness referral services. SEAK, TASA and similar services vet candidates and match them for you. They charge per placement or per referral, which is fair for a single case and adds up across a docket.
  • Colleagues and past cases. The most trusted source and the narrowest. You get the experts your firm already used, which is exactly the list opposing counsel has studied.
  • Jury verdict databases. Westlaw and Lexis show who testified and how it went. Excellent for vetting a name you have, and slow for finding names you do not.
  • Search each directory yourself. Work through the bar association lists, the commercial referral services and the medico legal registers one at a time. Merge the names in a spreadsheet and dedupe by hand. A solid shortlist takes most of a day.
