Where this starts

Headcount is missing or wrong on a third of any list you buy. Revenue is worse. You still have to decide whether a company is worth a rep's time, and you have a domain. Traffic rank is a proxy, and like every proxy it is right in aggregate and capable of being badly wrong on any single row.

Traditional Search Tools

  • SimilarWeb or Semrush. Traffic estimates with a real methodology behind them, and a subscription. Accurate enough at the top of the market and increasingly speculative in the tail.
  • LinkedIn headcount. Free and directionally useful. It counts profiles, not employees, so it flatters technology companies and undercounts everyone else.
  • Their own numbers. About pages, annual reports, press releases. Self reported and usually the most accurate thing available.
  • Look at the site. Careers page, customer logos, whether there is a pricing page at all. Two minutes and a person reads this far better than a rank does.
