Where this starts
Hiring a contractor, insuring one or selling software to the trades all start with the license. State boards publish license status, classifications and expiry, each on its own lookup form. Checking one contractor is easy. Building a list of licensed electricians in three cities, or checking five hundred at once, is not.
Traditional Search Tools
- Contractor directories. Angi and HomeAdvisor show license badges for listed pros. Only contractors who joined appear, and the badge may be self reported.
- Background check services. They verify licenses as part of a broader report. Priced per check and built for one hire at a time.
- Use the state lookup. Search the board's license lookup by name or number and read the status. Free and authoritative. Each state's form works differently and none of them export in bulk.
